Toph jumped from her spot on the ground, both in surprise from hearing Sokka's voice and her lack of sensing him coming.Turning her head sharply in the direction of his voice, she smiled.
"More like finding some shelter from all these pompous idiots. Especially the two that created me." She grumbled. "Now, help a girl get up. I can't move in this dress!"
Sokka reached out, and hoisted the girl to her feet. "That's pretty harsh."
"Meh, what can I say? We have a love-hate relationship!"
She threaded her arm in his as they walked a few steps to the stone bench that overlooked a small koi pond. Sighing tiredly, Toph leaned into Sokka's warm body and rested her head on his shoulder. It was something she had done many times before, but as Sokka's heart began to flutter, he found the once innocent gesture had become strangely intimate between them.
She had always been beautiful. He knew this regardless if she was polished or covered in dirt and sweat. But lately, the attention his best friend's beauty demanded from him was becoming stronger. And the ring he had bought Suki months ago suddenly felt very heavy in his pocket.
"You shouldn't marry him." Sokka felt the words leave his mouth before he realized he was thinking them.
"You don't love him."
It wasn't a question.
Toph frowned. "No, I don't. But my parent's do. I have no choice."
Sokka rolled his eyes at this. No choice? Since when did the greatest Earth Bender have no choice but to sit back a marry the person her parent's had arranged for her?
As if sensing Sokka's skepticism, she lowered her head. "Listen. Katara and Aang are off together creating a new world. Zuko is rebuilding his Nation. And You are going to be engaged to Suki any day now. And I'm..." Her voice shook, but she refused to cry. "I don't want to be the only one with the best days behind her. I don't love him.. but maybe.. being with a man I don't love is better than being alone."
Sokka watched her quietly, and felt his heart ache in his chest. He loved her. She was his best friend. Only now was he starting to realize that platonic love he felt for her all these years had changed into something more. Or maybe he had been to blind to see it before. Now that it was there, though, he'd be damned if he'd let it go.
"Then run away." He said. He felt a smile creep back onto his face.
Toph raised her head, and the faintest of smiles crept upon her face."Run away..?" She echoed. "Didn't I just say I didn't want to be alon-"
"I'll come with you."
His words, heavily weighted with things unsaid, hung in the air between them. Toph felt a warmth flush across her cheeks, and felt his hand squeeze her thigh.
Sokka sighed. He knew what the actions he was suggesting would result in. He had been with Suki for years. Yet he couldn't ignore the shadow it was in comparison to what he had begun to feel with his friend.
"Maybe... we're both a little too young to be worried about marriage." He started, then shook his head. "Listen, I'll worry about Suki. Don't marry him." He smiled as he saw her own face mirror his a smile reached her lips. "Just come with me, and we'll worry about the rest tomorrow.."
Toph gripped his hand.
"I thought you'd never ask."
